AlmaVia of Union City and Blue Star Moms put together care packages for troops stationed in Afghanistan | November 2010

UNION CITY -- Helping to put together care packages for troops stationed in Afghanistan on Saturday, San Ramon resident Monica Cisneros' eyes filled with tears as she talked about her 20-year-old son Andrew Ramirez. He was deployed as an infantry officer on the front lines of Afghanistan in June.

"I'm hoping the troops come home safe," she said.

Cisneros was one of several Alameda County Blue Star Moms and others who helped put together more than 30 care packages bound for members of the military in Afghanistan. Read more

AlmaVia of Union City hosts veterans’ storytelling sessions to mark Veterans Day | November 2010

UNION CITY -- In combat, sometimes the littlest things can make all the difference in the world.

If the U.S. Army hadn't taken over a Japanese airfield the day before Sal Nanfria's bomber crash-landed there, he might never have made it home. If he hadn't caught fever, he would have been on another flight that was shot down, killing his best friend.

Nanfria, 92, spoke about his wartime experiences this week during a series of veterans' storytelling sessions at AlmaVia Assisted Living in Union City, to mark Veterans Day. Read more

AlmaVia of Union City hosts a series of events honoring Veterans Day | November 2010

Twenty-four veterans who live in AlmaVia, an assisted living facility at 33883 Alvarado-Niles Road in Union City, will wave signs from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday inviting passing motorists to honk to recognize the service of veterans.

AlmaVia also is hosting a weeklong free storytelling event from 1:30 to 2 p.m. daily, with veterans describing their experiences during World War II, Korea and other conflicts. Read more
